The reset button, the hex slot, and the one rule that never bends
Take a flashlight into the cabinet. On the underside of the body, near the middle, sits a small red button: the thermal overload reset. It pops out when the motor draws too much current and shuts down rather than cook its own windings. Press it in until it clicks and stays. If it won't stay seated, the motor is still hot.
Second free fix is the hex slot at the centre of the underside. The L-shaped wrench that fits it came taped to the unit at installation, so it is either still there or in the junk drawer with the takeout menus. Slide it in and rock it hard, both directions, to turn the flywheel by hand and break loose whatever wedged against the impellers. Once it swings freely either way, the jam has released.
The rule, and this one is not negotiable: your hand does not go into the chamber. Not with the switch off, not with the breaker off, not for a second. Tongs or needle-nose pliers lift out the bottle cap or the chunk of bone. Garbage disposals do not carry spinning blades the way people picture them, but a stuck flywheel stores enough torque to hurt you badly the moment it lets go.

- Press the red reset button on the underside until it clicks home
- Work the hex wrench back and forth until the flywheel spins freely
- Restore power, run cold water, then tap the switch
That sequence brings plenty of Everett garbage disposals back to life. When it doesn't, the symptom tells you where the fault lives.

What the garbage disposal is doing, and what it means
It hums, but nothing turns
That is a disposal jam. The motor is energised, the flywheel is locked, and something hard is pinned between an impeller and the shredder ring: a peach pit, a screw off the dish rack, a sticker glued to a seed, a lonely piece of silverware. Kill the power, free it with the hex wrench, lift the object out, reset, try again. Leave it humming while jammed and the motor overheats, which is what the reset exists to prevent. If it hums freely with nothing obstructing it, the starting capacitor or the bearings are going.
Silence when you flip the switch
No hum means no power reaching the motor, so work backwards along the supply. Reset button first. Then the breaker, and whether the receptacle under the sink runs off a GFCI elsewhere in the kitchen that has tripped. Then the switch, which in a busy kitchen gets flipped until it stops making contact. We hold the electrical licence alongside the plumbing one, so when the fault is the switch or the circuit, the same technician finishes it.
Water in the cabinet
A garbage disposal leak is nearly always one of three joints, and where the water shows tells you which. Dry everything, lay paper towel under each connection, run water and look. High on the unit at the sink flange means the mounting assembly has loosened or the putty seal beneath it has given up, which is a re-seat rather than a new machine. The small side hose means the dishwasher clamp has relaxed or the rubber has gone brittle. The back, where the discharge tube meets the drain elbow, is a gasket or the flange bolts. The one nobody wants is weeping from the seam around the middle of the body, which means the shaft seal has failed.
It runs fine and the sink still drains slowly
Then the garbage disposal is not your problem; the pipe past it is. Ground food and grease build a sleeve inside the trap arm and out into the branch line, narrowing it for months. That job is clearing the kitchen line with a cable or a jetter, before a slow drain becomes a Sunday-night backup into both basins.
Habits, not lectures
What genuinely shouldn't go down a garbage disposal
Nobody needs a sermon about their own kitchen. But a few things reliably shorten a disposal's life or plug the pipe behind it, and they matter here because the failures they cause look exactly like disposal failures.
Fat and cooking grease lead the list, and the Pacific Northwest makes it worse than people expect. Bacon drippings and salmon oil pour warm and liquid, the disposal passes them along happily, then they reach a drain line crossing an unheated Marysville crawlspace in February and set like candle wax. Pour grease into a can and bin it. Coffee grounds pack into a sludge water will not lift. Rice and pasta keep swelling after they are ground. Celery strings, corn husks and onion skins wrap the flywheel instead of shredding. Bones, pits and shells are the classic jam, and so is anything that was never food.
The counterweight is simple. Run cold water before, during and well after, so ground material leaves the trap arm instead of settling in it, and feed waste in gradually rather than stuffing the chamber and hitting the switch.
A garbage disposal that gets a little routine attention rarely needs a service call at all. Every so often, run a handful of ice cubes and a spoonful of coarse salt through it with the cold tap open — the ice knocks the film off the grind ring and the salt scours it. Smell is a separate job, and it usually lives on the underside of the rubber splash guard rather than down in the chamber: pull the flaps back, scrub them, and you will find the odour was never coming from the garbage disposal at all. And when one refuses to start, check the reset before you book a service visit. It costs nothing, and it is the commonest fix we see.
50 to 100 gallons a day, per person. That is the City of Everett's own figure for how much used water each resident sends into the sewer, and everything your disposal grinds leaves the house suspended in it. Which is exactly the point: volume is not what plugs a kitchen line. Warm grease riding all that water still cools within the first few feet of pipe under the floor and stays put, collecting ground coffee and rice behind it until the sink starts running slow.
